TMJava is a part of TimeMap project. This is a non-profit research project, and we seek funds from users to assist with ongoing development and maintenance of the system. All income goes back into R & D. The project has also received substantial initial funding from the Australian Research Council and the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative and receives ongoing infrastructure support from the University of Sydney.
Licensing
TMJava is available at no cost for personal, educational and other non-commercial purposes. Commercial businesses have to obtain license from University of Sydney.
The cost would depend on:
- the scope of your applications and commercial benefits you derive
- the degree of support that you require
- whether you require source code
Our aim in licensing the software is to maintain and improve it in a prompt and professional manner. We are normally online 7 days/week and fix most serious issues within a couple of days, often hours. New features of general interest are often added within a couple of weeks of a user suggesting them. All this costs money and although the University provides infrastructure, we have to raise money for programming and support. By contributing to these costs you will be investing in a rapidly evolving system which moves much faster than commercial software (which generally prioritises stable identifiable product versions, chargeable upgrades and bottom line over innovation).
Depending on the user, their needs and level of funding, we have licensed the software for as little as US$350 with limited email support for an environmental project on third world agriculture to about US$50,000 with extensive support, including custom programming, for an online encyclopaedia. We regard this licensing fee more as a contribution to development than a commercial transaction.
To the best of our knowledge, licensing fees or contributions to program development are normally tax deductible, whether as a business expense or as a donation to the University, but you should seek professional advice.
Suggested contributions:
Server-based TMJava:
As a starting point we suggest a one-off contribution of US$500 per server on which you wish to deploy the software. This server-based license would not restrict the number of maps or applications which can be served from one server. We provide email support and advice to get you started and promptly resolve any problems.
CD-ROM or web site:
If you are developing products to distribute on CD-ROM or for third parties to serve independantly, then we ask you to factor a US$500 license for each server or per CD-ROM into the project budget. If it's a large project which can absorb more we ask you to factor in a larger amount.
Source code:
If you require source code, we suggest a contribution of approx. US$2,000 (about a week of our development and support budget) covering all of your servers. In this case we would also provide access to our programnmers, assistance with set up and any further explanation or documentation which would help you to set up applications.
Application setup and software customisation:
Please outline your project and we will quote on providing a turnkey solution.
Note: If this pricing structure does not suit your situation, or if you feel that these amounts are too high in relation to the scale of your application, please do feel free to suggest an alternative.
